North China Municipal Engineering Design & Research Institute ( CNMEDI ) founded in 1952, is located in 99 # qixiangtai road Hexi district Tianjin city, situated on the bank of Tianjin tower.

The institute , which was under the Ministry of Construction before, now belongs to China Architecture Design & Research Group. CNMEDI is an A-grade comprehensive design & research institute engaged mainly in municipal engineering, architectural, metallurgical (coking) industries, architecture (system engineering design). CNMEDI also has state A-grade qualifications of turnkey contract engineering, environment assessment, project engineering supervision and B-grade design qualifications of city planning, long-distance transportation pipeline of petroleum natural gas projects. CNMEDI also has the qualification of being an import & export company of P.R.C. The NERC for urban water & wastewater, the National center of Testing and Supervision for Gas Appliances, the City Gas Technical Development Center of the Ministry of Construction and the Quality Testing and Supervision Center for Equipment of Water and Waster Water Engineering of the Ministry of Construction are based in the institute. The Institute is a member unit of the International Gas Union representing China, body member of International Water Environment Federation (WEF) and council member representing China, board chairman unit for China Urban Gas Society, director member unit for Wastewater Drainage Committee of Hydraulic Engineering Branch of China Civil Engineering Society, vice chairman unit for China Urban Gas Society and Water Supply & Wastewater Drainage Discipline Branch of China Civil Engineering Society, member of China City & Town Heat Association, member of Urban Heat Supply Engineering Committee of the Ministry of Construction and main editing and management unit for the national Design Code for Town Gas. The national Office for City Planning and Utilization of Natural Gas is based in this Institute

There are, in the Institute, 8 engineering design divisions and gas research division, water supply & wastewater drainage research division, network information center and the related service bodies for engineering design management, technical archives, information and data management etc. The Institute has a staff of 876 people, among which, 1 academician of the state Academy of Engineering and national master designer for prospecting & design, 18 professoriate senior engineers, 336 senior engineers and 214 engineers. There are 3 youth experts of outstanding contribution conferred by the Ministry of Personnel, 9 youth experts of outstanding contribution conferred by the Ministry of Construction, 1 person qualified for the first – level candidacy for Tianjin 131 Talents Engineering program, 28 persons enjoying special government subsidies, 6 first class registered architects, 29 first class registered structural engineers and 1 registered supervising engineers,28 registered supervise and cost engineers.

The Institute is mainly engaged in planning, feasibility study, engineering design, project general contracting and works supervision for projects of urban gas, industrial gas, water supply & wastewater drainage, wastewater treatment, road & bridge, centralized heating, refuse disposal, recycle water usage and large industrial & civil buildings etc..   In the past 5 decades, the Institute has done more than 6000 items of technical work for over hundreds of cities, counties and towns in 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions in the fields of municipal engineering design, feasibility study, technical consultancy, test and detecting etc.. In recent years, the Institute has completed over 400 items of design work in the projects of city gas, city water diversion, wastewater treatment, heat supply and refuse disposal etc. , financed by the loans and grants of the World Bank, Asian Development Bank and some foreign governments. The Institute has got involved in and completed a large number of influential projects such as the Water Diversion from Luanhe River to Tianjin, the Natural Gas Pipeline to Beijing, the West Natural Gas Transmission to East, the South Yangtze River Water Diversion to the North, Shanghai Zhuyuan Wastewater Treatment Plant – the biggest wastewater treatment plant in China and Tianjin Jintai Heat Supply Center – the largest hot water boiler house in Asia, which are of high technical level. The Institute has involved itself in the technical consultancy and decision-making consultancy work for the natural gas planning of all cities in China, key polluted water areas of Huaihe River Basin and Haihe River Basin etc. and the South Yangtze River Water Diversion to the North ( the east line ). The periodicals of Gas & Heat and China Water Supply and Wastewater Drainage published by the Institute is the national first class technical publication The Institute has accumulated rich experience and achieved proud achievements and won gold, silver and bronze medals at national level, ministerial level and city level for over 100 items of design and scientific research of various types since the state started to award prizes and awards for design and scientific research achievements

Displaying its advantage of financing overseas, the Institute has actively broadened its scope of business and established a joint venture Guozhong Aihua Municipal Environment Engineering Co. Ltd (Tianjin), making a leading step forward in pioneering the extension of design, task probing and capital operation. This Institute has been on the list of top 100 prospecting and design institutes in China for a few consecutive years and was evaluated as an institute of AAA class credit rating.
